Reading Roundup, brought to you by humor

June 12, 2008

First, my apologies for the long hiatus of the RR. It will now return to its status of being semi-regular, rather than once-in-a-blue-moon. Now, the funny stuff:

From Stuff White People Like (which could just as accurately be named “Stuff Middle-Class Americans Who Deem Themselves Progressive Like,” but nonetheless is spot-on and damn funny in the process): “As of February 2008, white law requires an Obama 08 bumper sticker to be placed on the back of every Prius.” (Read the entire Bumper Stickers post. Seriously. I’m still giggling. And the Grammar post. I’m in love.)

I’m suddenly semi-hooked on the Fake Steve Jobs blog. I heard about it months ago, but had never actually read it until earlier this week, which happened to coincide with the unveiling of the iPhone 3G (*drool*). So. Effing. Funny. “Did you see it? Were you watching? Were you there? People, word up. That. Just. Happened. A faster, better iPhone, for as little as 200 bucks. Yeah. You should have seen the faces in the crowd. For a moment they were all just sitting there with this glazed, worshipful, vaguely confused look on their faces. It was the same look Joan Baez had on her face the first time she slept with me, right after I finished — just this curious look like, Who are you? What planet do you come from? Why do I hear angels singing? How did you do that to my lady parts, you strange intense monkey man?” [Hot Diggety Damn -- I do love blowing people's minds]

I love the way the writer depicts Jobs as utterly condescending and snobbish — because who doesn’t imagine that a tech mogul like him could believably be such a jerk? Such clever writing. (Incidentally, Fake Steve got to write a book?! The blog-to-book fairy tale knows no bounds. Well, I guess when you’re also a senior editor at Forbes, such things are not so far out of reach.)

While we’re on the subject of things I find amusing — more specifically, the send-ups of stereotypes and famous people that make me chuckle — allow me to introduce you to the Fug Girls, on the chance you have not yet made their cyber-acquaintance. I don’t even care about “fashion” (at least not in the type of haute couture they’re into), and I actually like a lot of the stuff they hate, but I cannot stop reading Go Fug Yourself. I can’t even choose an excerpt, because the posts are just saturated in their biting wit — besides, it’s not quite as funny without the photos.
