Perhaps you, like me, are a sucker for vintage jars, especially the kind with these latch-able glass lids. Or maybe it’s just me. But I seriously love these jars; I have them in about four sizes. OK, so I kind of love any jar with a lid, but I have a special place in my heart for these ones with the latches.

However, one of my favorite jars, a thrift store find that I love for its printed scene of a small country town, had a broken latch. For a while we used it as a spoon jar, leaving the unlatching lid to dangle awkwardly behind it, until finally last week I realized I could simply unhinge the lid.

As for that seemingly now useless lid, I found a new purpose for it: a drink coaster! All it took was a circle of cork, some pretty paper, and some hot glue…and voila:

(The surface that the cup sits on is the side that used to be the inside of the jar.) It works great, and took all of five minutes. So, there you have it: something to do with all those lovely latched-lid jars you have–the ones with non-working latches, that is. Or any other round-ish glass object, I suppose. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a cocktail to drink.

I love those jars too. I have a couple of them on my countertop with pasta and sugar and jellybeans in them.
This is a brilliant idea. But then again, you are pretty industrious when it comes to finding new uses for old objects.

Look at you, all handy-like. Quite a great idea. Your coaster looks wonderful. I am quite impressed.
I have somewhat of an issue with those latched-lid jars. Mostly because I have somehow managed to damage my fingers by closing or opening them.
Then again, I am a clumsy fool. True story.

I’ll admit, those latches can be vicious to unsuspecting fingertips.
